Automated Film Editing for Educational Applications? Don't make me laugh!

This paper considers the use of video material within educational software, in particular its automated generation to provide a system with sufficient flexibility to support the individual needs of the learner. We discuss the problems of context and shot-order within video and we present the influential aspects of the editing process. We then present a simplified model of the editing process. We outline our approach to automated editing by describing the architecture of AUTEUR, an experimental system that embodies mechanisms to interpret, manipulate and generate video. The potential application of these mechanisms for educational applications such as the summarisation and thematic generation of context oriented video sequences is described.
